26! Birthday + Block Party + !!! and more!

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

26

A few snapshots of my birthday weekend! To celebrate, I meandered down the street to the capitol hill block party where I was graced by the presence of the Yeasayers, Holy Fuck, MGMT, Blitzen Trappen, !!! and too many more to list. Hot and sweaty good times were had by all. The highlight? !!!’s amazing (as usual) performace. The other highlight? Birthday micheladas and churros at Barrios. Oh, and young and nimble hipsters scaling buidlings and rickety fire escapes to get a better view. It was THIS close to being like brooklyn, only a million times better.

West Coast Bon Odori Festival

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I was fortunate to attend the last few hours of the annual Bon Odori festival held at the Seattle Buddhist Temple this past weekend. The celebrations consisted of honoring one’s ancestors, shaved ice, yakisoba, and dancing in the streets until the sun went down, which happens pretty late around here.

fairy cakes!

fairy-cake

Ok, So I don’t post recipes often, but I just had to share this one. Its amazing. And unlike a lot of my recent forays into baking, this recipe turned out perfect. Fairy cakes seem to be the more fanciful U.K cousin of the vanilla cupcake, a bit lighter and fluffier. A bit more fairy-esque, especially when topped with fresh strawberries and edible flowers.

Heres how to make it! (its super easy)

Ingredients: (for 2 dozen fairy cakes)

  • 1 Cup Butter (softened)
  • 14 Tbs. Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 6 Tbs. Whole Milk
  • 1.5 Cups Cake Flour
  • 2.5 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1.5 Tsp. Salt
  • .25 Tsp. Baking Soda

Instructions:

  1. Sift flour, baking soda, powder and salt
  2. Cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla
  3. Gradually add in flour
  4. Gradually add in milk
  5. Pour batter into lined cupcake tins
  6. Bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes until set
  7. cool on wire rack

Ingredients: (icing)

  • 2 Cups Powered Sugar
  • 2 Egg Whites
  • .5 Tsp. Fresh Lemon Juice

Instructions:

  1. Combine egg whites and lemon juice
  2. Gradually mix in Sugar in small bowl
  3. Spoon over fairy cakes when cool
  4. Top with edible flowers, berries, or whatever strikes your fancy!
