the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees
Sunday, March 29th, 2009Spring has sprung, so we went to the local Arboretum in Asheville to hopefully
glimpse some cherry blossom action.
There were no cherry blossoms to be had, but there were throngs of people
wading througha sea of orchids at the orchid show that we stumbled upon.
The orchids were OK, but the real attraction was the chorus of frogs
(or toads, we are not sure) that took over a shallow pool to perform their mating calls…
And their mating.
And their child rearing….
After the charming security guard told us we couldn’t look at the frogs anymore,
we walked about and wondered how the Cane Toads of Australia were doing.
In case you haven’t seen the film Cane Toads: An Unnatural History,
there is apparently a rather large invasion of massive toads, slightly poisonous,
but otherwise friendly. See the movie, it has a toadnamed Dairy Queen, so its worth
it for that at least. As it turns out, the cane toads are NOT doing very well.
As the BBC reports, concerned citizens of Australia are going on a premature easter
egg hunt for toads, which they will gather up to then kill humanely. It conjures
up all sorts of great imagery, driving the toads out in droves with sticks…
- Spring is for lovers.
