success radish!    5.23.09

posted by griffin

so, we have had our first successful harvest. despite the odds, we
have managed to sow and reap our first radish. yes, that’s right,
a radish. our one and only.

unfortunately, the other radishes that were planted alongside
this one didn’t fare as well, and i was too preoccupied in stuffing
tomato plants through holes in buckets to notice that this lone
brassica was quietly growing on it’s own on the outer perimeters
of the garden.

upon plucking and slicing, we found that it’s flavor was much
sweeter and juicier than any store-bought radishes that we have
ever eaten before. the leaves will be made into a pesto tomorrow.
as for the tuber… munched down within mere seconds…

… dee-lish!

Possibly the greatest ramen packaging, EVER! These “science noodles”
are my latest and greatest find at the Ranch 99 Market in Atlanta.
Your one stop shop for all things Asian. For just $0.39 you can learn
about what I assume are diagrams of the big bang and the big dipper
while chowing down on MSG-smitten-carb-a-licious science!
“A kiss to the spirit of the future” as the back says…

Would you care for astronaut or wizard flavor?

The runner up was this sentimental cookie:

It even has a sort of…guarantee, kind of.

And yet still you are here at the bottom of my heart <3 <3 <3

companion planting, yes! lets do!    4.25.09

posted by griffin

so to ramp up the learning curve on our crash course on gardening, i am beginning
to delve into the dark arts of companion gardening. these occult practices are based
on the observations that certain plants yield larger crops and have less problems
with predatory insects if they are planted next to other certain plants, and have been
recorded since the time of the romans.

there are scores of charts out there that explain which plants secrete which substance,
to benefit another plant, and to ward off a certain pest. it’s all a lot to take in for the
first-timer so i have decided to help myself remember a few of the tips. one of our
favorite parts of our visit to japan last year was the multitude of colorful signs and
posters explaining yet one more reminder of proper procedures of daily life through
the use of cute characters. so to help us all keep in mind, the very esoteric rules of
companion gardening, i present the first two of a series of helpful posters presented
in plain engrish. what could be more clear than these?

a full afternoon’s work in the garden    4.19.09

posted by griffin

good day in the yard today. first a quick check up on the growth chart.

we mostly worked on the following areas. the small garden area on the side of the house
is now the herb garden with some sunflower and fennel sprouts well on their way. we
cleared away some brush on “the hill” area to make room for some wildflowers. ava
also has plans for the front walkway area also.

some of the dill and garlic chive sprouts have been let loose on their own in the herb garden.
the transplanting probably didn’t go as smoothly as they would have liked, so i hope that
they will make it. i hope that it’s not too soon. they seemed so much bigger in their starter
boxes but now are nearly unnoticeable in a large patch of garden. hang in there guys, you’ve
come so far, you can do it. gambatte.

so now ava has taken it upon herself to add color to the front yard area in the
form of phlox, wallflowers, and azaleas.

fast forward past several hours of digging, chopping roots and pulling foreign
material out of the ground, and the results are…

incidentally, here is a list of some of the aforementioned foreign objects that we dug up
while tilling the soil just today, most likely this list will be added to as we venture further.

  • a barkely toy
  • a rusted wrench (civil war era no doubt)
  • a toy alligator (scared the crap out of me)
  • a slice of plastic bread
  • a glass heart (blue)
  • a rusted door hinge (door currently missing)

yay for easter baskets!    4.13.09

yay-for-easter-baskets

Happy Easter to all you Easter going people out there.
I haven’t had an easter basket in a really, really long time.
Neither has Lily, so we decided to make each other one.
She hosted a pretty fantastic adult easter egg hunt, with
cupcakes, candy and all the trimmings. I have been in a
sugar coma since.

Here is what I made for Lily: A singing Jesus doll that sings the timeless classic
“Jesus loves me” (I had to sacrifice a little lamb to get the speaker out) Hey!
you have to break a few eggs to make an easter basket!

Lily also made kick-ass baskets for me and Griffin, His is the boy looking one,
mine is the girl looking one. We got all kinds of goodies like grow-your-own
farm animals- buttons, tea, wooden puzzles, toy soldiers and cowboys and indians!
sweet!

But seriously, I’m off candy for awhile now. I won’t
even go into the long list of confectionary treats we
were bestowed, it makes me sick just thinking about it.

garden update - why yes, they ARE growing    4.12.09

so, im happy to report that progress has been quietly made on our front porch.
after a few tense weeks of looking at nothing but dirt in small square boxes, small
glimpses of greenery have been appearing. so it looks like this blog category will
continue after all. I knew it all along…

so if you’ll indulge me for a few photos further, here are the highlights…

this will someday be many large beefsteak type tomatoes.

the dill has also been coming along swimmingly. these were actually the first
sprouts out of the gate and have been continuing the trend ever since.

the radishes, actually planted weeks after the initial batch of seeds mentioned in the
previous post are shooting up faster than anything else. time to go in the ground soon?
maybe?

radishes someday sooner

and finally, one lousy anaheim chili has finally decided to show itself.
